I hate Minnesota winters. They are so dreadfully cold and cause people to stay inside and lose touch with friends. Yesterday was very nice though. A balmy 35 degrees. I got to see a whole lot of people at the Hexagon and catch up with some of them.
And my new living situation is...alright. Being with Joel and Lee at the hex made me remember how much I miss living with them. Those times were so much fun. So much more fun than I'm having with Kitty. It's not that I don't like Kitty. She's just...boring. She is much more responsible than my old my roommates, but it's not really rubbing off on me, so what's the point? All it contributes to is me spending more time alone and me having to take more buses to get to other people's houses. Although we did have a fun fondue party last night! The one thing that I really like about my new place is that it's actually pretty cute and i can do lots of cooking and decorating. At my old house those concepts were pretty much non-existant.
And school is going great. I'm T.Aing the intro to youth work class with my favorite professor. I'm interning at a literacy/confidence building program at a great community center. I'm taking a really interesting research and evaluation class with a brilliant professor. We're going to have lots of opportunities to do real, meaningful research for the city of St.Paul. I just need to find a PAYING job. the one that I thought I had is being a total bitch about shit. But i'm going to their employee party tonight with my friend, so I'll corner the GM and intimidate her into hiring me. Or charm her. that's probably a better option.

Thanksgiving was very nice. I miss going home, but it's nice to spend it with friends. I went to Jen's and we made a delicious dinner. It was just me Jen and Seth for the dinner. But then we went down to Caffrey's, the sandwich shop a bunch of my friends work at. The owner bought a bunch of food and booze and invites anyone (who is connected to the shop through an employee) who doesn't have anywhere to go for thanksgiving. we had a few drinks then jen and i went back to her place with rafi and joel for pie! and drinks. a few too many. oh well!
Other than that i have so much freaking work for school. like...three papers this week. oh well. i'll make it work. also, when i get back from Maine (i'll be there from the 18 to the 30 of december) i'm going to start working a shift or two a week at a really nice jazz club/restaurant, the Dakota.
see all you mainer's in maine in a little while!

well, obviously i'm just as excited as everyone else. this is amazing. the energy all day yesterday was crazy.
and last night. so cool. watched the votes come in at Josh's. went to grumpys and was promptly handed a gin and soda and champagne can by mark. ran into some people and watched obama's speech at grumps. couldn't have thought of a better place to do it. i love everyone there and everyone was so happy and i almost cried.
after that, marge convinced me to head to palmers. and i'm so glad i did. West Bank was crazy. People were dancing in the streets, people pouring out of the bars and pouring out of riverside plaza (a primarily immigrant populated housing project) and everyone just hugging and chanting and seeing old friends. it felt like everyone was coming out of some awful 8 year long haze. all of the anarchist punx who hang out over there were happy. they forgot for a minute that they're disenchanted by our government and celebrated the possibility, the hope of change. When I left at 2 the crowd was still raging.
our senate race has not been resolved and it's going to get uglier, but the main goal of this election has been accomplished. let's home we're all ready to make this change.

i've been so fucking busy lately and it kind of sucks. i'm moving this weekend. i'm so excited about that. my friend kitty and i are moving to a big apartment just about 10 blocks from my current house, but the block is more familys, less hood. and closer to a grocery store, major buslines and a liquor store. yay! but because of this move i've fallen behind on my school work. i have a lot of reading to do for one class. i've been doing really well on my papers and got an a on my midterm, the highest grade of anyone i've talked to so far. but i'm not doing my reading forms, which are worth more than the midterms. whoops.
my mom was just intown this past weekend which was really fun. she came to diplo with me and ryan and brandon and allison and amy. and i went to of montreal on saturday which was AWESOME. best show ever almost, but kind of different from anyother show because it was very theatrical.
there are so many shows during october and i guess i would have to attribute some of my slacking to the fact that loving to go out + loving to see live music + free tickets = not staying on top of what i should be doing. so far i've gone t.v on the radio, broken social scene (not that into either of those), david banner, ratatat, diplo, of montreal, method man and red man...tonight's starfucker and saturday is king kahn and the bbq show...and that's just in the past few weeks. and i'm probably forgetting some! i don't think i'm going to be able to go to girltalk next week because i'll be moving plus it's almost sold out already and i don't want to deal with that shit. and i probably won't go to gang gang dance and marnie stearn, even though both new albums are awesome, because they're playing on election night! wtf!! bad choice. anyways, i guess this is more just a record of shows that i've gone to for me to remember. no one reads this anyways i'm sure. but if you do i miss you!

things are going very good and for the first time in a long time i feel like a real student. i'm very into school and my classes. I'm taking three youth studies classes. there are a lot of the same people in my classes, because the youth studies program is so small. that's pretty rare at a school as huge as mine. i'm also taking an afro class with a really awesome teacher. I've also got a new job, working at the Electric Fetus. It's an awesome record store in minneapolis. it's been open for 40 years. i work in the basement doing cd inventory. it's pretty easy, almost relaxing. my boss is cool. i get to work with some friends and i get free tickets to almost every show that comes through minneapolis. sweet!
however it kind of sucks because i'm SO BUSY. my schedule during the week basically consists of going back and forth from my classes in st.paul to the fetus. wake up, go to class, go to work, go back to class, go to the library, wake up, go to work, go to school, go to the library. and soon I'll be working with a group called Youth Venture on Saturdays.
but even with all of this busy-ness i've still managaed to find time to do fun stuff. i went to a winery in stillwater on sunday, i went to harriet island and saw the roots on saturday.
now all i need to do is find a new place to live come november...

This summer has been pretty fantastic.
i had an awesome job working for an art collector. i've biked a lot, played a lot of kickball, made a lot of new friends, and now one of my very good friends is back from a year in China.
I haven't made it down to chicago or anywhere really, except i did make my first journey to northern minnesota this past weekend. i went up to al's cabin witch is about halfway between minneapolis and fargo.
i'm looking forward to school starting and getting a new job. the job will most likely be with a youth organization, like Project legos or the parks and rec board. although i may get the events coordinating position at an art museam, or a marketing job. no more customer service for me for a lonnnng time.
we had a really fun party for al's birthday and kitty's return from china the other. lots of great people came and we'll probably have a final party in a week or two for adam's going away and lee's last week in a wheel chair. oh yes, my roommate broke both of his heels and has been in a wheelchair all summer. i will be sad to move from this house and these people. we've had a lot of good times and i'll miss all of them.
anyways, that's a quick update on my life. hope everyone is doing well! -hannah

i cannot wait for spring. this winter shit is starting to kill me. although this weekend was particularly nice and riding my bike was actually enjoyable. well, aside from the fact that my bike sucks to ride. i need a new one bad.
Big night for Minnesota at the oscars! the coen brothers rocked it and gave minneapolis st paul airport a little shout out! and diablo cody...sorry, i hated your script but that dress was kinda fierce, so whatevs. i tried watching the bootled copy of no country that ryan lent me, but it fucking skips from the beginning to the end!! so lame!!
so much homework to do tonight!! i hate homework. but i guess it's just two 3-5 page papers,so that's not so bad. right?
also, listen to vampire weekend. i like the cd.

Then on tuesday i left my laptop cord in nicholson hall. and i haven't heard back from the janitors yet.
and then yesterday i lost my gym shoes AGAIN. possibly in my spanish classroom. fucking a, i would lose my head if i didn't have it locked to my neck!

So the rest of my vacation went about the same as the rest. I literally sat around almost all day, everyday. watching tv, eating food, surfing the internet. it's been freezing, what can I say. This past weekend I went to Wisoncsin with Brandon. We got pretty wasted and smoked inside at some bars in his tiny hometown. Saturday night we went to his step-dad's graduation party. It was really fun and there were lots of characters there. Sunday I had my first real big football experience. About 30 people watched in their huge living room. They had a keg, lots of food and some crazy Packers fans. And then the Packers lost!! hahahah. whatever, i didn't care. Brandon's roommate got a puppy. cute!
Monday was more sitting around, but today, today is the day i started school!! It was so nice to be out of the house, doing something. I headed to campus around 9:30 and hung around until my class at 11. That went alright. Then lunch with Al, and then I went to the gym. It felt really good to get a bit of a work out. Then I went to my Urban Youth and Youth Issues class. It seems like it should be interesting. Some of the poeple seem pretty cool. A friend of Al's who I'd never met was in the class and he some how recognized me and invited me to Leaning Tower with him and Al and some other people. My Contemporary Black Writers class seemed a little...I don't know, it will probably be good, just a LOT of reading and a LOT of writing. I wish the class wasn't only once a week, because I'd like to know if I should drop it or not. But it will probably be too late by next class. Oh well. Then after class I met up with Al and Abe at Leaning Tower.
And now i'm back at home!! yay!! More school and job hunting and workin out tomorrow!

since i've left maine things have been pretty blah. New Years eve was alright, except that i puked in the drive through line at mcdonalds. cute. Other than that i've been extremely unproductive and not very happy. I"ve read a lot of harry potter, gone out to lunch a lot and slept a lot and stayed in a lot.
things got a little better on sunday. it was really nice out and me and my roommates (joel and lee) and my soon to be roommate (olivia) plus rapheal went and bought a ton of food and made a kickass brunch. egg quesadillas, steak, bacon, hashbrowns, and lee made a cake. it was fun and nice to utilize our huge kitchen. Monday was pretty lame. i woke up at nine, showered, made breakfast, started to read while my hair dried, and then i fell asleep again until two. at night we made pancakes and watched transformers and flight of the conchords.
Today i tried to get up early, but ended up sleeping until noon. i sat around with lee and tanner for a while, applied for some jobs online. I called this one place and have an interview with them tomorrow. It seems like it would be really good. It's a grassroots organization called Take Action Minnesota. They're working on key issues for the upcoming elections and blah blah blah.
After that I decided to leave my house. I took a much needed relaxing bike ride. I've been feeling soooo lazy and gross lately. I haven't had much physical activity. ever since i left for maine i've been pretty sedentary. no dancing, no biking, not even much walking. So I biked to loring park and saw matthew for his birthday. then i went uptown to caffrey's and got a huge sandwhich on the super cheap from lee. Then i biked waaaay south to bloomington and 40th and applied for a job at a bowling alley. then i biked home and I'll probably stay here for the rest of the night, watching tv with joel and maybe reading harry potter.

Finals are almost over. My anthropology final was saturday. It went horridly. I just felt like I didn't know anything and most of my answers were based on only a little knowledge. No good. Then I came to Brandon's on Sunday afternoon and made him dinner before settling in for some serious study time. It wasn't too successful, but I managed to get a chunk of my first Civil Rights and Black Power Movement paper done. Then I woke up and worked on it a little more, before going to Jen's parents house and raiding the fridge with her and Brandon. We lounged for a while. I would say it was a needed break from studying, but it really wasn't, since I'd just spent an hour hanging out with Al on his lunch break from work.
When I got back I started writing and really got into the groove! I was like, puttin down sentences left and right, comin up with info to back up my thesis and shit! it was all good until I realized i had to get to my spanish final in hour and study for it too. And then i realized that I left my work book that accompanied a telenovella that we watched in class at home! So i rushed over to Folwell to talk to my teacher, but she wasn't in her office, so i went to wait in the classroom. There were a few others there, and I got some studying done. Then i found out that the test started 20 minutes later than I thought it did, so I could have biked home to get my work book. or stayed at Brandon's and worked on the paper more. ugh. Even though at least 4 of us had forgotten the work book, my teacher wouldn't let us bring it in tomorrow.
I took the final and it went a lot better than I thought it would. I think I'm getting a decent understanding for the language, but there are still a lot of things that I don't think I could figure out for speaking purposes, though. I also go my composition back, on which my teacher noted that I was, so far, getting a B, so I didn't need to worry about forgetting the workbook. phew!
Now it's back to sort of paper writing at brandons. I will be here for the next 13 hours or so trying to pump this shit out! but i'm getting really distracted right now...Most of one paper is written. I'm sort of starting to work on the other one. I'll be up late, but i'm proud to say that this is the first successful school year I have had in a long time that was not aided by any sort of drugs! Well, I do have a red bull on the way, but I hardly think that counts. Anyways, time to smoke a cigg and yell at the downstairs neighbors for being loud assholes. oh red bull, is that you coming up the stairs!? See you in LESS THAN 48 HOURS, MAINE.

well, i should be much more concerned about my finals, but i'm not. I'm so tired and out of it right now. it's been a rough week of too much fun. our Repeal of Prohibition party went well on wednesday. lots of whiskey drinkin and fancy dress and dancin and shit. I stayed up until 3ish with big joe, my roommmates coworker. thursday i came home from work and found a bunch of dudes chillin at my house, so i drank some whiskey cokes and watched a movie with them. Friday I came home from happy hour with amy and ryan and al to find people hanging out at my house again. just like, 10 or so people, but it turned into everyone taking their pants off and dancing in their longjohns. a longjohnathon, if you will. then some random girls came over and of course everyone else passed out, but brand and allison came over so i stayed up with them and the girls, and then brand and al gal left and oakley and anna came over and we all danced to fun stuff like shangrilas and black lips. fun stuff!!
saturday i went to a party near my house with quite a crew. it was a U party (read: college hipsters. we rolled in 8 deep and took over the place. Anna and Oakley's super foxy friend alex came with us. i'd met him before and thought he was an ass, but he's actually super nice. and foxy. anyways, we were competely ridiculous at the party, especially since ryan and al had taken a little bit of mushrooms. We left around 3 and took most of the booze with us. and quite a few of the revelers. we continued the dance party in our living room, where the music could be played much louder. it dwindled down to just oaks and anna and alex and his friend and i. i ended up talking to alex for about an hour on the kitchen couch. he's just so damn personable and nice. anyways, they all left eventually and joel and i made food and hung out for a while. i ended up passing out on the kitchen couch and al woke me up way too early. i took a pain killer and had a bloody mary when i woke up and watched tv with a bunch of peoples all day. fell asleep for a little while. Then went sledding!! and made sushi at ashley's house!! very tastey. but now i'm about to pass out and feel a litle loopy.
time for finals this week!! back to maine soon.

ugh. i'm going to be up late writing and it's not even homework. I've procrastinated way too much on this film review for 360 (the mag that I write for). I hope jen will still accept it. All I've written so far is one little film summary. I need to do about two more of these and an intro and an outro. here's my little write up for Juno. this movie should be good:
Juno is one film that is sure to please all. It’s a perfect little indie film with Hollywood appeal. Micheal Cera (Superbad, Arrested Development) stars opposite Ellen Page (Hard Candy) in a story about two friends who get together and make a baby, by accident. After chickening out at the abortion clinic Juno (Page) decides to have the baby and give it up for adoption. This is an excellent film that dances around Hollywood clichés and also avoids some typical indie clichés as well. No dysfunctional families here, just supportive and loving parents who want to help their pregnant daughter. Allison Janey, Jennifer Garner and Cera’s T.V dad, Jason Bateman, play excellent supporting roles. Cera, known for his awkward teen roles, doesn’t stray too far from that territory but is allowed to confront more mature issues than previous roles have allowed. Point of Conversation: “Hey mom and dad, aren’t you glad I didn’t get pregnant in high school!” (certain situations may not apply).
ugh. i'm bad at this.

M.I.A was so awesome. Brandon and I went all the way to the front and had a great time pissing off the people around us. The afterparty was even sweeter, with Low Budget DJing and Rye Rye did an awesome set and M.I.A was just hangin around looking hot. Thanksgiving turned out well. Drinks and steak and lots of good food at Brandon's. Stopped by Logville (raphi and issa's house) and smoked a shit ton of weed. Then over to Jared's thanksgiving party, which was ok.
Coming home in less than a month! so excited!

This weekend should be very fun. As I previously mentioned, Friday I will be going to Michael Showalter & Micheal Ian Black, followed by Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings. And I am on the guest list with plus ones for both. Very proud of that. And so much better than paying about $40, plus saving friends money.
Then Saturday is sorta packed. work til three. Then there are three parties that I would like to/feel obligated to go to. Ryan's dance party. eh, small apartement, probably no booze, not many peeps i know. Martin & Chelsies. pro: fun warm drinks, good dancing, don't see those folks too often. con: far from other parties, far from my house, not too many folks i actually want to see. and, well, just check out the third.
This is the flyer for the third party:
at my friend ashley's. and yes, i'm the pog competition. which means i get a sweet tee shirt.
so pretty much that's the gonna be the sweeeeetest. rock. i'm only posting in here so much because my school workload is increasing and i want to avoid it. and tell everyone in maine how freakin cool i am.

hell ya for getting MYSELF on list for BOTH shows that i want to go this friday, and not having to depend on jared and then having to hang out with him and probably have an awful time. guested for Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black! sweeeet! i've been wanting to see these guys FOREVER. like, seriously, for years and years and now i finally get to, in a pretty nice theater (although i would prefer a much smaller venue). i'm dropping off some promo stuff around town for Showalter's new album (Sandwhiches & Cats, super fucking funny, check it out. It comes out tomorrow!), so i just told the contact guy that i write for a magazine and might like to do a piece on Showalter's album and the show and maybe he could get me on the list for their minneapolis show? and i got an e-mail back right away saying i was on the list. And I'm on the list (i think) for Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings at first ave through the connects at 360. Go networking!!
